Over the last several years we've heard much about how to become environmentally friendly, but sometimes we forget just why we should make all these lifestyle changes. In case the issue has become a little clouded, or if you haven't really given it much thought, here are five reasons to choose sustainable living.
1. Environmental. Each time we use an energy source - even though it doesn't seem like much to us - it has an effect on the environment. Our environment is where we - and others - live. So if we ruin where we live the world as we know it today, will not be there for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. By choosing sustainable living, our environment will support us and provide for our needs until the year dot. If we don't, it won't. It's that simple.
2. Health. Even now we see the unhealthy effects that our pollution has created. There is a pall of smog over nearly every city that causes much of the population to suffer from asthma, sinus, hayfever and even cancer or cancer-related illness. When we allow toxic waste to be dumped into our waterways, it ends up in the sea where it is ingested by the very sea creatures that we eat. Poisoning our environment is simply the same as poisoning ourselves.
3. Well-being benefits. There are benefits to looking after the planet that have to do with aspects of our well being other than our immediate health. If climate change is going to cause the sea level to rise, then those of us with homes near the coast will be affected. Whole cities could go under water. Changing climate may extend tropical disease zones, increasing the incidence of malaria and similar diseases. The resulting severe storms may very well smash our homes to the ground.
4. Climate change. While climate change has always been with us to some extent - otherwise we would still be in the ice age - it seems to be escalating and will soon cause a whole host of problems that are impossible to fix. By decreasing our use of non-renewable energy, we can play an important part in halting or even reversing this change.
5. Global warming. Global warming is on the increase, but it only takes a minute amount of global warming to affect the climate. Global warming is caused by the increase of certain gases in the atmosphere and leads to more rapid climate change that can be dangerous to human life.
So basically, choosing sustainable living will not only save the earth's resources for future generations, but also make sure those who are on the planet now have better quality of life across every nation.
